Our idea is to replace the previously used antibiotics and other strong antimicrobial agents, because the increasing antimicrobial resistance is one of the major medical problems that need urgent action. The importance of this problem is reflected in the global initiative One Health launched by the World Health Organization (WHO). The One Health initiative is based on the idea that the problem of spreading antimicrobial resistance can be solved only by global simultaneous actions towards “healthy people, healthy environments and healthy animals”. Only such orchestrated and multidirectional actions might save us from going back to a time before penicillin was discovered.
Spreading of antibiotic resistance is one of the major medical problems that require urgent action. The importance of this problem is reflected in the global OneHealth initiative launched by the World Health Organization (WHO), which is based on the premise that the spread of antibiotic resistance can only be addressed through global, coordinated efforts to promote “healthy people, healthy environments and healthy animals”. Only such committed and multidirectional activities can save us from going back to the time before the discovery of penicillin. Our concept is to develop alternative ways to eliminate pathogenic bacteria that would replace commonly used antibiotics and other potent antimicrobial agents. This new approach will be used to prevent and treat bacterial infections in animals, and potentially also in humans.
